NSW security licensees now have greater flexibility when choosing the term of their security licence, with a new three-year option introduced from 1 September 2026.
The NSW Security Licensing & Enforcement Directorate (SLED) has introduced a three-year security licence term as part of the remade Security Industry Regulation 2026.
Previously, NSW security licensees could select either a one-year or five-year licence term. The new three-year option sits between these existing choices and is available for all security licence types.
What has changed?
From 1 September 2026, applicants can choose between:
- a one-year licence;
- a three-year licence; or
- a five-year licence.
The three-year option is available for both new security licence applications and licence renewals lodged from 1 September 2026.
For licensees, the change provides an additional choice when considering the period for which they want their licence to remain current.
Part of the new Security Industry Regulation
The additional licence term forms part of the remade Security Industry Regulation 2026.
Earlier this year, the proposed introduction of a three-year term was among the changes released by SLED for public consultation. That consultation closed on 3 July.
SLED has now confirmed that the three-year term has been introduced and is available to NSW security licensees.
What should NSW licensees do?
There is no requirement for existing licensees to change their current licence simply because the new option has become available.
Rather, the change provides an additional option when making a new application or renewing a licence.
NSW security providers and individual licensees should consider which available licence term best suits their circumstances and refer to SLED’s current licensing information and fee schedule when applying or renewing.
